Commvault licences: editions, terms and quotes

Commvault Cloud backup, recovery and cyber resilience for SaaS applications, cloud and on-premises data, supplied, set up and renewed through one Forever Systems account.

In short: Commvault licensing through Forever Systems gives UK organisations access to Commvault Cloud, a single platform for backing up and recovering Microsoft 365, Salesforce, Active Directory, Entra ID, virtual machines, endpoints and databases. SaaS workloads are licensed per user, infrastructure by protected capacity or instance, and we scope, quote and manage the subscription.

What Commvault does

Commvault is an enterprise data protection company. Its software backs up, recovers and governs data wherever it lives: SaaS applications such as Microsoft 365 and Salesforce, identity systems such as Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID, public cloud workloads, virtual machines, databases, file servers and laptops.

Everything Commvault sells now sits under one brand, Commvault Cloud. That includes the SaaS backup services Commvault used to market separately as Metallic, which were folded into Commvault Cloud in late 2023, and the self-managed Commvault software that many organisations have run on their own servers for years. In November 2025 Commvault announced the Commvault Cloud Unity platform release, which brings data security, cyber recovery and identity resilience together in the same platform.

The practical point for buyers is that one platform and one console can cover very different workloads, delivered as a Commvault-hosted service, as software you run yourself, or as a mix of both.

The Commvault product line-up

Through Forever Systems you can license the Commvault Cloud platform and the SaaS services built on it.

The same platform also offers backup for Microsoft Dynamics 365, Google Workspace, Okta, endpoints, Azure DevOps, GitHub and GitLab, plus security capabilities such as Threat Scan (malware scanning of backup data), Threatwise (cyber deception) and Commvault Cleanroom (recovery into an isolated cloud environment). Tell us what you need to protect and we will confirm which services apply.

How Commvault licensing works

Commvault uses different licence units for different kinds of workload, so most quotes combine more than one.

  • SaaS applications by user: Microsoft 365 and Salesforce backup are licensed per user. Active Directory backup is licensed per enabled user, and one licence covers that user in both on-premises AD and Entra ID.
  • Infrastructure by capacity or instance: servers, VMs, databases and files are licensed by front-end terabytes or by protected instance. The Commvault Cloud platform page explains how each is counted and when each makes sense.
  • Laptops and desktops by endpoint user: endpoint backup has its own user-based licence rather than counting against capacity.
  • Isolated storage by capacity: Commvault Air Gap storage is bought as a set amount of capacity. Backups stop writing once it is full, so it needs sizing with headroom.

On top of the licence units, the platform is sold in three cumulative packages: Operational Recovery, Autonomous Recovery and Cyber Recovery. Commvault licences are subscriptions, and we confirm the term and billing frequency for each element in your quote.

Buying Commvault through Forever Systems

We look after the commercial and technical side so you deal with one supplier.

  1. Scope: we count users, enabled identities, servers and front-end data, and check which workloads Commvault should protect and which are better left to tools you already own.
  2. Quote: we recommend the right tier and licence units, then quote them. Ask us for a quote rather than relying on list figures, because the mix of users and capacity changes the answer.
  3. Set up: we create the Commvault Cloud tenant, choose a UK data region where residency matters, connect Microsoft 365, Salesforce or Active Directory and build backup plans with sensible retention.
  4. Run: one account and one invoice from us, with user additions, capacity increases and renewals handled as changes rather than new contracts.

Which Commvault services do you need?

Some common starting points:

  • Microsoft 365 organisation with no on-premises servers: Microsoft 365 backup, plus Active Directory backup to protect Entra ID users, groups and conditional access policies.
  • Sales team running on Salesforce: Salesforce backup for records, metadata and sandboxes.
  • Hybrid estate with servers, VMs and databases: the Commvault Cloud platform in the Operational Recovery package, with Air Gap storage for an isolated copy.
  • Ransomware recovery planning: Autonomous Recovery for replication and automated failover (and the option of Commvault Cleanroom), or Cyber Recovery for threat scanning, cyber deception and sensitive data discovery as well.

Frequently asked questions

Is Commvault Cloud the same as Metallic?

Yes, in effect. Metallic was Commvault's SaaS backup brand from 2019. In late 2023 Commvault brought Metallic into Commvault Cloud, so the Microsoft 365, Salesforce, endpoint and other SaaS services once sold as Metallic are now Commvault Cloud services.

Can Commvault backups be stored in the UK?

Yes. Commvault's documentation lists a United Kingdom region for its SaaS workloads, including Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Dynamics 365, Salesforce, laptops and Google Workspace, and Commvault Air Gap storage can be placed in the UK. We choose the UK region when we set up your tenant if residency matters to you.

Is Commvault only for large enterprises?

No. Commvault's SaaS services, such as Microsoft 365 and Salesforce backup, are licensed per user and need no backup servers, so they work for smaller organisations as well as large ones. For on-premises protection Commvault also offers Commvault Edge, which it positions for remote sites and smaller businesses.

How is Commvault priced?

It depends on the workloads: per user for SaaS applications, by front-end capacity or instance for infrastructure, and by licensed capacity for Air Gap storage. Ask us for a quote and we will size each part against your estate.

Do you sell Microsoft licences on this site?

No. Commvault protects Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, but the Microsoft subscriptions themselves are handled by Forever Group's Microsoft licensing team.
