What Egnyte does
Egnyte is a cloud content platform for organisations that have outgrown the shared drive. Files live in the Egnyte cloud and staff reach them through the web, mobile apps for iOS and Android, or the Egnyte desktop app, which presents the cloud as a drive on Windows or Mac. Around that sit controlled sharing with clients and suppliers, version history, global file locking, review and approval workflows, and, on the higher editions, governance tools that look for ransomware, suspicious logins and sensitive data.
Egnyte also has an AI layer that answers questions about, and summarises, the content you already store, and it offers industry-specific options for architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), financial services and life sciences. It supports co-editing in Microsoft 365 apps online and on the desktop and in Google Workspace, so it can sit alongside the productivity suite you already use rather than replace it.

Every add-on sits on top of an Egnyte Platform subscription, so the first decision is always which edition you need.
How Egnyte is licensed
Egnyte is licensed per power user. Power users are your own staff, with full use of the web, desktop and mobile apps; standard users are clients, suppliers and partners who are given access to shared folders. You choose one Platform edition for the organisation, license each power user, then add what you need:
- Edition: Starter, IFS, Elite or Ultimate
- Standard users: extra standard users in packs of five (IFS, Elite and Ultimate)
- Storage: additional cloud storage per terabyte (Starter, IFS and Elite)
- Co-Pilot (AI add-on): per user, monthly, on Elite or Ultimate
- Project Controls and Specialized File Handler: per user, monthly, with the quantity matching your Platform users (IFS, Elite and Ultimate)
- Storage Sync: per instance, monthly (IFS, Elite and Ultimate)
Through our account the Platform editions are billed monthly. IFS, Elite and Ultimate can be taken on rolling monthly terms or on a 12-month commitment, during which user numbers cannot be reduced; Starter is supplied on a 12-month commitment only. Each edition can start with a 13-day trial, which converts to a paid subscription unless it is cancelled before it ends. Prices depend on edition, user count and term, so ask us for a quote. Does Egnyte replace a file server?
Yes, that is its most common use. Egnyte's Migration App moves files, folders and their permissions from an on-premises share to the cloud, and staff then work through the desktop app, the web or the mobile apps. Storage Sync or Smart Cache can keep a local copy in the office where you need one.
Does Egnyte work with Microsoft 365?
Yes. Egnyte supports co-editing in Microsoft 365 apps online and on the desktop, and also integrates with Google Workspace. Microsoft licences are not supplied on this site; see Microsoft licensing.
Can I try Egnyte before buying?
