Why back up Entra ID
Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) holds the identities and rules that control access to Microsoft 365: who your users are, which groups and roles they belong to, and the Conditional Access policies that decide how they sign in. If an administrator deletes the wrong group, a sync tool overwrites attributes or an attacker changes policies, Microsoft's recycle bin covers only some object types, and permanently deleted objects cannot be recovered once 30 days have passed. There is no simple built-in way to roll a policy back to how it was last week.
NinjaOne SaaS Backup + Entra adds that rollback. It takes automated, point-in-time backups of your directory alongside your mail and file backups, so you can recover both your data and the configuration that controls access to it.

You manage Entra backups in the same console as your Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace backups, and the same storage terms apply as in every bundle.

Entra protection is sold as part of a per-user bundle, not as a separate directory licence. You license the users you protect and the directory backup comes with them. If you already have Standard and want to add Entra protection, we will arrange the change of bundle. Ask us for a quote for your user count and term.
Requirements and set-up
You need a Microsoft 365 tenant using Microsoft Entra ID. An administrator grants the backup service access to the directory, and Entra backup is then managed from the same NinjaOne SaaS Backup console as your other workloads. Restores write back into the live directory, so we agree with you who is allowed to run them.
Entra backup is a recovery tool, not an access control. Use it alongside good identity practice: MFA for every account, few standing admin roles and regular reviews of Conditional Access. If you are also reviewing sign-in security, Cisco Duo and our identity and access category cover that side.

Does Microsoft back up Entra ID?
Not in the way a backup does. Entra ID has a recycle bin for some deleted objects, but permanently deleted objects are gone after 30 days and it cannot roll back changed settings such as Conditional Access policies. A separate backup gives you point-in-time recovery.
