In short: The Island Extension adds Island's enterprise controls to browsers people already use, including Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on Windows and macOS. It covers data protection, safe browsing, private app access and AI governance from the same console and policies as the Island Enterprise Browser, deployed through your MDM and licensed per user.
What the Island Extension is
Not every organisation can ask staff to change browser. Some users rely on Safari, others on Edge profiles tied to Microsoft 365, and contractors may refuse to install a new browser on their own laptop. The Island Extension solves that by bringing Island's controls into the browsers people already use.
It works in Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Safari and other Chromium-based browsers on Windows and macOS, and it uses the same console and the same policies as the Island Enterprise Browser. One set of rules applies whichever browser a person uses.
What it covers
- Data protection: application boundaries that keep corporate data in approved apps, watermarking of sensitive pages, blocking of screen capture and printing where needed, and context-aware rules on data movement, all logged for audit
- Secure access: reach internal apps through Island Private Access without a VPN, with real-time protection against phishing and malware and risk assessment of other extensions
- AI governance: visibility of AI tool use, prevention of sensitive data flowing into unapproved AI apps and redirection to sanctioned ones
| Island Extension | Island Enterprise Browser | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs in | Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox and other Chromium browsers | Island's own Chromium-based browser |
| Platforms | Windows and macOS | Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, IGEL OS, iOS, iPadOS, Android |
| Depth of control | Core capabilities, within the limits browsers place on extensions | The fullest set of Island controls |
| Best for | Mixed browser estates, fast rollout | Managed staff, contractors, BYOD on any platform |
How it is licensed
The Island Extension is licensed per user. Many organisations combine it with the Enterprise Browser, using the browser for some groups and the extension for others, and we can license both on one account. Add-ons such as Zero Trust private access can apply to extension users too; we confirm which add-ons you need when we quote. Ask us for a quote with your user numbers.
Deployment
The extension is deployed through your existing MDM or browser management, in the same way as any other managed browser extension. It enrols automatically, so users do not need to sign in or take extra steps, and there is no imaging or VDI involved. Policies created in the console apply straight away to every browser where the extension is installed, so a new rule for a sensitive app does not need a separate rollout.
Who it suits and how we help
The extension suits organisations with a mixed browser estate, teams that want quick wins on data protection and AI governance without a browser change, and those planning a phased move to the full Enterprise Browser. We plan the rollout through your MDM, build policies for your key apps, and help you decide which users should move to the full browser. A common pattern is to start with the extension across the whole organisation for visibility and AI governance, then move contractors and high-risk roles to the full Enterprise Browser where deeper controls are needed. Compare options in secure enterprise browsers.

Contact usFrequently asked questions
Which browsers does the Island Extension support?
Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Safari and other Chromium-based browsers on Windows and macOS.
What is the difference between the Island Extension and the Island Enterprise Browser?
The Enterprise Browser is a full browser with the deepest set of Island controls on every major platform. The extension brings the core controls into existing browsers, within the limits browsers place on extensions.
Can I use the Island Extension and the Enterprise Browser together?
Yes. Many organisations use both, managed from the same console with the same policies.
How is the Island Extension deployed?
Through your MDM or browser management, like any managed extension. It enrols automatically without users signing in.
