In short: Symantec Email Safeguard.cloud is a package of Symantec Email Security.cloud services for filtering business email. It combines anti-spam with business email compromise detection, multi-scanner anti-malware with link checking, and content and image control policies for mail in and out. Through Forever Systems it is licensed per user and billed monthly.
What Email Safeguard.cloud is
Email Safeguard.cloud is a package within Symantec Email Security.cloud, Broadcom's cloud email security service. Your domain's MX records point to Symantec's cloud, which scans every inbound message for spam, malware and phishing before delivering clean mail to your mail system. Outbound mail is routed through the same service and checked on the way out, so spam sent from a compromised account is rejected before it damages your domain's reputation.
On top of threat filtering, the package includes content control and image control. Content control lets you write rules for mail entering and leaving the organisation, for example holding messages that match sensitive keywords or patterns such as account numbers, including text inside attachments. Image control looks for inappropriate images in messages and attachments. Together they help you apply acceptable use and data handling policies to every message, whichever mail platform sits behind the gateway.
What is included
| Service | What it does |
|---|---|
| Anti-spam | Several detection methods, including approved and blocked sender lists, SPF and DMARC checks, a dynamic IP block list and spam signatures |
| Business email compromise detection | Business Email Scam Analyzer detections, reported alongside other spam and malware detections |
| Outbound spam scanning | Outbound mail identified as spam is rejected before it leaves |
| Anti-malware | Multiple scanners, including Symantec's Skeptic heuristic scanner, which is designed to catch new and previously unseen malware |
| Link following | Skeptic opens links in messages and checks the destination; once a link is confirmed as malicious, later mail containing it is blocked |
| Content control | Policies that check message text and attachments against keyword, regular expression, domain and URL lists |
| Image control | Approved and blocked image lists, a shared global image database and Image Composition Analysis heuristics, with separate sensitivity for inbound and outbound mail |
| Quarantine and alerts | Mail blocked as malware is held for 30 days unless an administrator with quarantine access releases it, with configurable alerts |
| Portal and reporting | Dashboards, Track and Trace message search, and summary and detailed reports that can be scheduled and emailed |
Click-time URL protection, Cynic sandboxing and URL and attachment isolation belong to Symantec's separate Email Threat Detection and Response package, and email encryption is sold as Policy Based Encryption. They are not part of Email Safeguard.cloud; ask us if you need them.

Requirements and deployment
Because Email Safeguard.cloud is a gateway, there is no software to install on laptops or mail servers. What you need:
- Control of your domain's DNS so the MX records can be changed
- A mail platform that receives mail over SMTP: Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, on-premises Exchange or another mail server
- Your mail platform set to accept inbound mail only from Symantec's service, so attackers cannot bypass the filter
- Outbound mail routed through the service if you want outbound scanning
Users can be registered in the portal or imported from your directory with Symantec's Synchronization Tool, which reads email addresses and group memberships from an LDAP directory such as Active Directory and can run on a schedule.
A typical cutover with us:
- Provision your domains and users in the portal.
- Build anti-spam, content and image control policies to match your needs.
- Configure your mail platform's connectors and lock down inbound delivery.
- Change the MX records at a quiet time and monitor mail flow and quarantine for the first weeks.
Who it suits
Email Safeguard.cloud suits organisations that want a mature, independent filtering layer in front of their mail system, especially those with on-premises or hybrid mail where API-only products are not an option. It also suits regulated sectors and public bodies that want content rules applied to every message in and out, and schools that need image control for staff and pupil mail.
If you would rather keep your MX records pointing at Microsoft 365 and add protection inside the mailbox, compare the API-based options in email security. Read more about choosing email security on our Cloud Security site.
